The Ross Fountain is the beautiful fountain in the heart of Princes Street Gardens. There is a fantastic shot of the fountain, with the castle towers in the background. This can be taken from just under the nearby trees.

Ross Fountain sits within Princes Street Gardens. It was produced at the iron foundry of Antoine Durenne. It was originally part of the 1862 Great Exhibition and was then purchased by the gunmaker Daniel Ross in 1862. It was installed in 1872 and has been renovated in 2001 and 2018. It has now been painted turquoise, brown, and gold, and the paintwork should last at least 20 years.

When to shoot

This is in the middle of one of Edinburgh’s main attractions. It is rare for this to be empty of people, so an early morning is pretty much a must.

There is almost always a lot of people around so take multiple photos and use a median filter. The median filter will take the average of the same pixel in all images. With 3 or more photos, it will remove something that is in one photo. If the people are moving and dont overlap, then they can easily be removed.

What to Capture on Camera

The photo above is shot with a 50mm lens on a full-frame camera, with no cropping on the image. I would recommend getting a little further away or using a slightly shorter focal length than I used. This will capture the entirety of the fountain.

Food and Drink

Just off to the right and behind where this is taken, there is a drinks and sweets stand. It is also next to the center of Edinburgh and a few streets away from George Street. George Street has a plethora of bars and restaurants.

Transport

Princes Street Gardens is just off Princes Street. Which is served by almost every bus which travels through the city centre¹.

Edinburgh Castle Terrace carpark (750 spaces)² which is near by. .
